SAFAKNA TURKEY– While stating that Streptococcus A is a bacterial infection, Çiftçi emphasized that it is an infection, also known in the community as “beta”, which has been observed for many years.
Saying that streptococcus A was less common as a result of the measures during the epidemic, Çiftçi said: “After the pandemic, we have seen more strep A disease, as well as other respiratory tract infections. Strep-A mainly causes tonsillitis. The disease is also very easy to recognize and progresses with symptoms such as fever, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, headache, abdominal pain and vomiting in children.” he said.
“If not treated in time, it can lead to severe clinical pictures”
prof. Dr. Pointing out the importance of timely treatment of the disease, the farmer continued his words as follows:
“If Strep-A is not treated in time, it can cause a more severe clinical picture. In some children, a skin rash, which in our people is called “scarlet fever”, can occur with a throat infection. In addition, it can lead to a serious clinical picture in the soft tissues of the skin, which we call “streptococcal toxic shock syndrome” or “necrotizing fasciitis.” There is a violation of blood circulation with a very severe picture, affecting the entire body. But these are rare cases.”
It is believed that low immunity can lead to serious diseases.
Regarding whether there has been any change in the disease pattern compared to previous years, Çiftçi said: “During the pandemic, we were in isolation and we became less sick with many diseases. The fact that many children did not suffer from these diseases during this period led to insufficient stimulation of the immune system of children. We believe that this situation and the fact that many viral infections are circulating with the lifting of post-pandemic measures exacerbate the problem of streptococcus A.” gave his assessment.
Noting that there has been a serious rise in Streptococcus A cases, especially in Western countries, Çiftçi said:
“Some cases of Streptococcus A in Western countries have resulted in death. This is actually a warning to us because Strep-A is a worldwide bacterium and there is a possibility that a similar clinical picture can be observed in other parts of the world, including in our country.
Unfortunately, we are starting to see signs of this right now. The number of cases of Streptococcus A has increased significantly. In addition, invasive and more dangerous clinical forms of Streptococcus-A have become somewhat more common in the world. In our country, data in this direction began to appear. Therefore, we must be much more careful. It looks like we’re facing a bigger problem than in previous clinical periods.”
“In our country, there is an increase in cases of streptococcus A”
prof. Dr. Regarding the increase in cases in Turkey, Ergin Çiftçi said: “Streptococcus A is not one of the notifiable diseases in our country, but we know from our colleagues and cases that we have seen that there is an increase in cases of Streptococcus A. We know that there is the growth of severe forms of the disease, which we call invasive types. “We are seeing more severe clinical forms of the disease, such as streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, scarlet fever, necrotizing fasciitis and pneumonia.” shared his knowledge.
Emphasizing that respiratory tract infections are now much more common, Çiftçi said Streptococcus A can actually occur throughout the year, but is more common in winter because it is airborne.
“Every child with a fever should be examined”
prof. Dr. Ergin Çiftçi also warned families about the disease:
“Every child who has a fever or is sick should be seen by a doctor. Doctors know Strep-A very well, there are diagnostic tests for it. Streptococcus A is a disease that can be treated with antibiotics. Once doctors review Strep-A, they can begin appropriate treatment right away. Families should use medicines for their children as recommended.
The disease is easily treated with antibiotics. Usually the fever subsides within the first 24 hours and the infectiousness of the disease disappears. However, children who, despite ongoing treatment, do not decrease the temperature, whose general condition worsens, and especially those who have a rash, should be seen again by a doctor.
“It is mostly seen in children between the ages of 5 and 15.”
Noting that streptococcal toxic shock syndrome is very rare, Çiftçi said that it leads to a severe clinical picture, progressing with a rash on the body and deterioration in the general condition of children, and that children with this condition should be hospitalized and treated.
“Strep-A mostly occurs in children between the ages of 5 and 15, less frequently in children under the age of 3 and in adults,” Ciftchi says. said.
“Increase in hospital admissions due to respiratory tract infections”
prof. Dr. The farmer also shared the following information on whether the number of hospitalizations has increased:
“Now we see that respiratory diseases are very common. On the one hand, Covid-19 continues, in addition, we see viruses such as influenza, RSV, adenovirus quite widely, they have increased hospitalization.
In some children we observe pneumonia, sometimes in the form of viral and sometimes secondary bacterial infections after viral infections. For this reason, the number of admissions and hospitalizations has increased significantly. There are also cases of streptococcus A, but it cannot be said that they make up the majority in terms of inpatients.”
