SAFAKNA TURKEY – With the onset of winter, the consumption of fruits and vegetables increased to protect against influenza diseases. When fruits and vegetables consumed for a healthy diet are consumed out of season, more harm than good can be seen. The low levels of vitamins in fruits and vegetables produced out of season and the chemicals used in their production have a negative impact on human health.
“THE CONSUMPTION OF VEGETABLES AND FRUITS IS HIGHLY EFFECTIVE IN REDUCE VARIOUS DISEASES”
Eda Ünal, a dietitian, stated that the consumption of vegetables and fruits is effective in reducing various diseases, and said: “The consumption of vegetables and fruits is very important for a healthy diet. We always attach great importance to the adequate intake of carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and water in a balanced diet. It is very important for us to consume seasonal vegetables and fruits, especially as a source of vitamins and minerals, in appropriate portions. The World Health Organization (WHO) attaches great importance to the consumption of at least 400-500 grams of vegetables and fruits per day. These values may vary by disease and age, but we recommend an average of three servings of vegetables and two servings of fruit per day. Consumption of vegetables and fruits is very effective in reducing various diseases. It is especially effective in reducing many diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity and constipation. We attach great importance to the consumption of vegetables and fruits, especially in strengthening the immune system, which has a protective effect on us in the winter. However, the types of vegetables and fruits, which differ depending on the change of seasons, do not change on the shelves.
“WE RECOMMEND TO EAT VEGETABLES AND FRUITS IN THE SEASON”

Saying that they recommend eating vegetables and fruits in season, Ünal said, “Especially in these times when food technology is advancing, we see out-of-season vegetables and fruits on the shelves. Vegetables that we see especially in winter are broccoli, cauliflower, white cabbage, carrots, radishes, yams, red beets, celery, leeks; we see that there are fruits that are high in vitamins, such as apple, pear, orange, tangerine, grapefruit, quince, banana and chestnut. However, we also have vegetables that do not grow during these months. These vegetables are sold on the shelves along with various medicines and preservatives. These foods contain fewer vitamins and minerals. Especially when the vitamin and mineral content of spinach harvested in the winter and summer seasons is examined, it seems that especially vitamin C differs by a factor of three. In other words, we see that the content of vitamins and minerals in vegetables and fruits produced with these hormones is low. Since these vegetables and fruits offered to us on the shelves have a toxic effect on the body, early puberty can cause an early menopause in women. In addition, these preservatives, drugs and hormones cause many diseases such as headaches and indigestion. More importantly, these foods cause cancer. That is why we recommend eating seasonal fruits and vegetables, both economically and for our health. We need to be very careful in this situation. They may use different storage methods such as drying, canning, or deep freezing in order to consume seasonal vegetables and fruits with the same taste at different times of the year. But seasonal food is very important for us,” he said.
“SOLD HIGH BECAUSE IT’S OUT OF THE SEASON”

Vegetable market vendor Irfan Yildiz, noting that off-season products are expensive, said: “We get sick because we don’t take vitamin C in winter. We don’t eat greens, we consume tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. For example, few farmers grow strawberries. At this time, we sell for patients, children, and it’s expensive because it’s not the season. Eat fruits and vegetables according to the season. Eat summer fruits in summer and winter fruits in winter. A market trader named Murat Muthitemiz stated that everything should be consumed in season and said, “Everything should be consumed in season. Summer fruits and vegetables are more expensive because they are grown in greenhouses at this time of the year.
