“Not all impacted teeth need to be removed”

SHAFAQNA Türkiye – Claiming that many factors can affect the impact on the teeth, Istanbul Gelishim University (IGU) Faculty of Dentistry, maxillofacial surgeon and specialist in implantology Prof. Dr. Sheref Ezirganli made a statement about the impacted teeth, saying: “As a rule, teeth remain in the bone due to lack of space.”

“IMMEDIATELY TEETH CAN BE WITHOUT PROBLEMS FOR YEARS”

Emphasizing that the third molars, most commonly referred to as wisdom teeth, remain impacted, Prof. Dr. Ezirganli said: “Because these are the last teeth in the mouth, they usually cannot find the necessary place for them to erupt, and, although rarely, other teeth are also impacted. Impacted teeth can remain problem-free for many years. Impacted teeth can sometimes cause serious problems. In particular, partially erupted lower wisdom teeth cause inflammation from time to time, and patients go to the dentist with various problems such as bad breath, cavities and pain. The teeth in this situation should be removed by an oral surgeon.

“NERVE DAMAGE CAN DEVELOP ON HIT”

Claiming that pathological conditions such as cysts and tumors can develop around impacted teeth, although rarely, Prof. Dr. Ezirganli said: “These pathologies should not be considered only for wisdom teeth, they can occur in all impacted teeth. However, this does not mean that all impacted teeth should be removed. After all, every operation has certain risks. The biggest risk in surgical extraction of impacted teeth, especially in the lower jaw, is numbness of the lower lip and tongue due to nerve damage. This numbness can sometimes be permanent. While impacted wisdom teeth in the upper jaw do not usually cause problems, they are more likely to cause problems in the lower jaw. Sometimes we can leave the roots of the tooth to avoid the risk of lower jaw numbness. We can cut off the top part, which we call the crown. Of course, we do this to extract non-carious impacted teeth that we consider too risky or when the patient cannot afford the risk of mild numbness. In the presence of pathologies such as caries or a cyst, a tumor, the risk of numbness is ignored. The entire tooth needs to be removed. Cysts or tumors should not remain,” he said.

“THEY SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE ROOT OF THE TOOTH IS COMPLETED”

Expressing that the extraction of impacted teeth is not always necessary, Prof. Dr. Ezirganli said: “If you do not take it, we recommend that you undergo X-ray observation once a year. If an impacted tooth is causing pain or infection, is associated with any cyst, tumor, or if it is deemed appropriate for extraction by an orthodontist, even if there are no problems, it is advisable to have the impacted teeth removed by an orthodontist. maxillofacial surgeon. Sometimes it can be removed at the request of the patient. In such cases, the most appropriate period is to be carried out at a young age until the development of the tooth root is completed. This is important from the point of view of minimizing possible risks.”
