SHAFAQNA Türkiye – Beginning of admission of patients in the neurological clinic of the Duzce University Hospital, Assoc. Dr. Burcu Polat shared information about migraine, one of the most common neurological diseases in society. Claiming that migraine is a special type of headache resulting from some electrochemical changes in the brain, Assoc. Dr. Burcu Polat said: “The pain usually starts on one side of the head and gets worse. A migraine headache is much more bothersome than a regular headache, lasts longer (at least four hours), and is accompanied by nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light, sound, smell, and touch. said. Noting that migraine affects 1 out of 6 women and 1 out of 10 men in our country, Assoc. Dr. Polat said that this disease is among the diseases that cause victimization, worsening the quality of life of people in our country and in the world.
Saying that the prevalence of migraine is about 20 percent worldwide, Polat said that some triggers; He pointed out that people with an appropriate genetic predisposition may experience migraine attacks at some point in their lives. Expressing that hormones, hunger, stress, sleep disturbance, various foods, insufficient water intake, climate change, unsuitable environmental conditions in terms of light, sound and smell are the main triggers for migraine, the professor at Duzce University continued his explanation as follows:

“Upper respiratory allergies and associated sinusitis are also seen in most people with migraines. Migraine attacks are triggered by stress, but this is not the type of pain that is inherently defined as psychological. Brain tumors are fortunately among the rare causes of headaches. Examination, blood tests, and brain imaging studies are often normal for migraine patients. Sometimes a doctor may prescribe additional examinations not for diagnosis, but to exclude other causes. When diagnosing a migraine, a doctor has to choose between 296 different types of headaches. A specialist doctor can easily distinguish a headache.” Assoc. Dr. Burcu Polat emphasized the importance of follow-up and treatment for 3 months, especially in patients who have more than 3 attacks per month and whose attacks last for a long time.

Assoc. Dr. Polat noted that promising results have been obtained from thousands of patients who have used the vaccine around the world. Emphasizing that surgical interventions on the nerves that transmit sensation of pain, known as migraine surgery, are approaches to treatment that do not have a scientific basis, Polat said: “There is no surgical intervention for migraine, there is no logic.” He said.

Medical aspects of migraine; leeches, cupping, homeopathy, prolotherapy, herbal medicine, etc. Acupuncture can only be considered as a treatment option for people who do not respond to classical migraine treatments or who are unable/unwilling to use drugs.

Noting that it is very harmful to use painkillers often and for other purposes, Assoc. Dr. Polat, “Similarly, trying to endure pain without treatment for migraine can also lead to irreversible chemical changes in the brain, as well as a deterioration in people’s quality of life, causing depression and sleep disturbances.”

Is a migraine a disability? Emphasizing that “chronic migraine” is among the top 10 diseases on the emergency response list according to a World Health Organization report, Assoc. Dr. Burku Polat said: “It has been reported that in 1 out of 4 patients, the deterioration in the quality of life exceeds 90 percent. More than 65 percent of patients reported that they had problems at work due to migraine attacks. These patients annually spend $40 million in the US and $50 million in Europe. About 100,000 people in England are unable to go to school or work due to migraines. Migraine is the second leading cause of disability after stroke.
